Trails Update/Trail Report

Dan U. presented the results of a forestation survey he performed of the trees which were planted in April and May of this year. Five hundred white pines were planted at Weber Park. About 100 were examined; none of them had died; about a half dozen had compromised vigor. One hundred twenty-five red pines were planted; we have lost one third to one half of them. Between 100 to 150 of the red pines planted last year are doing well. Two hundred fifty red maple that were planted are doing well; a few had insect damage. The spruces and maples planted on the nontillable south edge of the Arboretum Connector Trail are doing well. Trees planted along the Wildwood Station Trail seem to be doing well; Kent M. has been watering them.

The Buckthorn that were cut in Weber Park in winter of 2007 and chemically treated in the fall of 2008 are pretty much wiped out. Other forest cover plants are coming up in the former buckthorn area such as Touch-me-nots and Goldenrod and some red maple seedlings. Several tree nuts were planted last year but it is too early to assess their progress; some native flowers were also transplanted.

Kent and Cindy Mueller have begun clearing Buckthorn behind their and assenting neighbors homes along the Wildwood Station Trail. They and other volunteers will again work July 2 afternoon.

Updates

There has been a delay in the ordering of T-shirts, etc. but it will be done soon.

The MAFOTT website should be up within a few weeks. Chuck Treankler will be finishing it for us. His high school class did a great deal of work on it but were unable to finish it before the school term ended. The address will be www.marshfieldtrails.com.

New brochures will be developed and printed since we are running low. Todd Brown will be working on the updating.

Other Business

The noon Rotary Club has given a donation of $250 ; a thank you will be sent to them. Thank you’s were sent to Girl Scout Troops 6333, 6235, and 6280 who helped clean the trails and parks this spring.

The Public Works Board and the Common Council will be discussing and hopefully passing the funds for the new trail from Wildwood to McMillian Street this month. Attendance by MAFOTT members is highly encouraged.

John Scheuer attended the Highway 10 update meeting on June 9. He reported that Marshfield assess to the proposed trail along Highway 10 would need to be east of the Village of Hewitt. In the future the plan is to take the trail to Fond Du Lac and beyond. The four lane highway would need to be crossed to get to the Mead Wildlife Area. There is space to put in a pedestrian bridge near HwyS. There will be roundabouts placed at intersections of 13, 10, and BB and at Highway 10 West.

Gordy A. reported that the proposed trail from Veterans Parkway toward Hewitt will be an off road trail; Auburndale has reapplied for a grant to establish trails in their community; bike racks for Central Avenue will be looked at later - MAFOTT will be asked for input; there have been request for more benches along Veterans Parkway Trail – prices are being researched.

The speed limits along Adler and the pedestrian study of the intersection of Adler and Lincoln will placed on next month’s agenda. Safe Routes to School will also be placed on the agenda.

LeRoy E. moved to adjourn, Dan L. seconded the motion; the motion passed.

The next meeting is August 5, 2009 at the Senior Center at 7:00 p.m.
